Elementary Memo
March 14, 2012
Dear Parents,
Please note the following reminders:
March 15 - Mayfair Casual Day: There will be a Mayfair collection tomorrow, March 15, 2012. Students who bring in items for Mayfair 2012 will be able to dress in casual attire. Items for donation may include used clothing, used books, used toys, and used sports equipment.
March 15 - Report Cards: Report Cards will be distributed tomorrow, March 15, 2012. This gives you time, prior to spring break, to see the teacher if you have any concerns or questions. The report cards are to be returned to your son’s teacher by Thursday, April 5, 2012.
March 16 - Green Day: The students in the elementary will be able to dress in green on Friday, March 16, 2012, in honour of St. Patrick’s Day, which takes place on Saturday, March 17, 2012. If the students do not have any green, they may also wear their VC spirit wear. Dismissal on Friday will be at the regular time of 2:40 pm.
March 16 - Stations of the Cross: The elementary students will be participating in the Stations of the Cross on Friday, March 16, 2012, at Sts. Peter and Paul, at 10:00 am. Please feel free to join us.
In April:
Holy Week: Upon our return from spring break, we will be journeying through Holy Week. The elementary students will be participating in the sacrament of reconciliation during Holy Week. Please review this sacrament with your sons.
April 16 - Tennis: The tennis lessons with Gerry Mackin will take place for two weeks starting Monday, April 16, 2012. This is a real favourite for the VC boys.
April 18 - Mayfair Casual Day: The Mayfair collection day for April will be on Wednesday, April 18, 2012. Please support the Mayfair 2012 by bringing donations to the school.
April 19 - Mass: The grade four class will be preparing the elementary school Mass on Thursday, April 19, 2012. Please feel free to join us for the celebration of Mass.
April 25 - Late Start: Please mark your calendars for April 25, 2012, which will be a late start day because of a full staff meeting.
Other reminders:
Cafeteria for Microwave: Students in the Elementary are not permitted to use the microwaves in the cafeteria. If you would like your son to have a warm lunch, please send his food in a thermos. Elementary students often misuse the microwaves as food is processed too long, melting the container as well as the food. Also, some students have put metal items in the microwave, causing damage to the microwave. It is well known that plastic items should stay out of the microwave, and students often have plastic containers in hand ready to microwave. Please note, we will not be allowing elementary students to use the microwave.
Peanuts: Please remember that we ask parents not to send any nut products to school as we have a number of children that have serious live threatening allergies to nuts. Please do not send Nutella sandwiches, peanut-butter sandwiches, nuts, chocolates or candy containing nuts, cookies containing nuts, or any other nut item.
Lent: We are now in the season of Lent, the season of change and new growth. Lent began on Ash Wednesday, and it is about participating in the death and resurrection of Jesus, about dying to an old identity and being born into a new identity. It is the season of increase prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. If you did not begin your Lenten journey on Ash Wednesday, it is not too late to begin now. We should focus on prayer, especially the prayer of the church liturgy. Fasting should be linked to concern for the poor who are forced to fast by their poverty. In almsgiving, we are called to works of charity and justice. Children always look to our example. It has been said that children do not hear what we say; they see what we do. It is important for us to lead the way in all things, especially our spiritual life. It is only through having a serious Lenten journey that we can experience the joy of the resurrection on Easter.
I would like to wish everyone a happy and fun-filled Spring Break!
Sincerely,
Barbara Seppelt
Assistant Principal
