Student Services Memo to Grade 11 and 12

2011, Sep 20

VC Post Secondary Fair

All grade 10 – 12 students at VC and LFA and their parents are invited to the Post Secondary Fair which will be held from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. on Monday, October 3rd. Approximately 40 post secondary institutions will be represented at the fair.

Student Services Memoranda

This year we have begun to send memoranda to both grade 11 and grade 12 students and their parents. This reflects the shift in our post secondary program to begin in the fall of the grade 11 year through the second half of Planning. Recently we met with all grade 11’s in the Planning classes to overview the post secondary research and selection process and to introduce the students to a number of search engines and general considerations to begin their research. We encouraged them to begin their research now and continue it through the grade eleven year, through online research, attending the many post secondary presentations that are offered at the school, individual appointments with us, and assignments in their Planning course. A list of these search engines and information about research and selection is available on the VC website at:  Student Services > Post Secondary Research and Selection. Our meetings with the grade 12 students will begin in the last week of September and students are encouraged to meet with us individually for assistance throughout their selection and application processes.

Reminder:  External Courses

Students who have completed external courses through summer or online school must complete an External Courses Documentation Form, available in the Student Services Centre or on the Student Services link on the VC website, attach a photocopy of their report card, and submit it to Ms. Castelino by September 30th. This process is necessary for the school to include any courses taken outside the school on the transcripts sent to post secondary institutions.

Canadian Post Secondary Applicants

Many BC and Canadian application portals are open. Students are encouraged to apply as soon as they have made their selections, especially to local colleges, some of which operate on a first-come-first-serve basis for enrollment in courses. This first phase of application often does not require that grades be sent but allows a file to be created for the student. More information on application is available on the VC website > Student Services > Post Secondary Application and on individual post secondary websites.

US and International Post Secondary Applicants

Because of the extensive requirements and earlier deadlines of many US and international universities and colleges, students interested in applying to them must complete the Student Biography Form (available in the Student Services Centre and on line at the link referenced above) and begin to meet with either Mrs. Beck or Mr. Accili as soon as possible in the month of September.

VPD Notice

2011, Sep 08

Thieves will be looking for easy targets for auto crime this school year. Police are reminding parents to secure their vehicles and be on the lookout for suspicious activity this school year.

  • Remember to remove your valuables from your vehicle and to take them with you while escorting your children on school property.
  • Remember to lock your vehicle. Thefts from auto can occur in seconds without arousing suspicion.
  • Remember that sports equipment is highly visible and makes tempting target for thieves.

If you witness a crime in progress, call 9-1-1 immediately with a description of the suspect. If you believe that you have been the victim of a crime, call the VPD Non Emergency Number at 604-717-3321.

For more crime prevention information, please contact your local community policing centre at 604-717-3223 or visit the VPD website.

It is hard to believe that we are into our last two months of the school year as the days have gone very quickly. Though spring has not been optimal, we hope to see some better weather for May and June.

The cast and crew of “Grease” are to be congratulated for a phenomenal production. The show had a great run and was enhanced by the live music of the band. Special thanks to all of the students, staff, and parents who helped to make the musical come alive!

Our Administrative Team is currently working on completing our staffing requirements for the 2011-12 year and we will inform you of this work once it has been completed. We congratulate Mr. Michel DesLauriers on his appointment as Principal of St. Thomas More effective September 1, 2011. Mr. DesLauriers has done a stellar job as Assistant Principal for Middle School during his 12 years at Vancouver College. Our new Assistant Principal will be announced shortly.

We would also like to share with you that Ms. Carole Prescott, one of our campus ministers and Senior School teachers, has been appointed Assistant Principal of Little Flower Academy effective September 2011. We wish both Mr. DesLauriers and Ms. Prescott all the best as they move to their new assignment and we look forward to working more closely with STM and LFA next year.

All families should have received an email invitation to our Mother’s Day Masses, which take place on Wednesday, May 4th. This is a very special Vancouver College tradition and we hope that all mothers (grandmothers, aunts, and friends) are able to attend this celebration. The Middle School mass will take place at 9 am in the Alumni Gymnasium, Senior School mass at 11:30 am in the Alumni Gymnasium; and the Elementary mass at 1:00 pm at Sts. Peter and Paul Parish.

Many families are now planning their summer activities and we ask that you please keep our Finnegan Summer Program in mind. Our 2011 summer catalogue is available online and this year we have added the convenience of registering and paying online (www.vc.bc.ca). Copies of the brochure may also be picked up in the Main Office. Our co-ed camps for children of all ages are open to everyone so please let your extended families and friends know. Any proceeds realized from Finnegan Summer are used to enhance the programs and facilities of Vancouver College.

Mayfair is the next major event on our calendar and it takes place on Saturday, May 14th. This is a wonderful day with lots of fun activities for everyone. I hope to see you there.
