Reporting Absences

Parents’ Responsibility Regarding Attendance

If a student is absent from school for any reason, parents are asked to be sure to telephone the office and supply a note of excuse, as outlined in the section on Attendance above. The school does not recommend early vacations or extended vacations for students which require them to miss school.  This is particularly relevant for examination periods at the end of the term/year. Advance notice must be given to allow for alternate work to be prepared.  The student is responsible for any work, assignment, exam missed as a result of this type of absence.

As stated in the Vancouver College Code of Conduct, every parent at Vancouver College shall:

  1. Call the Main Office  (604-261-4285 ext. 399) before 9:00 am if their son is going to be away from school.
  2. Send a written note with their son upon his return to school.

Parents' Responsibility Regarding Late Arrival

  • Students are expected to arrive to school on time and be on time for each class.
  • If a student will be late because of an appointment, parents are asked to call the Main Office (604-261-4285 ext. 399) before 9:00 am and ensure their son has a note to support his late arrival.
  • Students who arrive late to school (unexcused) on two occasions in a week will be required to serve an after school detention.
  • Flagrant offenders will receive progressively more serious consequences.  Tracking these students who are late to school and holding them accountable will be the responsibility of the Main Office and the Assistant Principals.
  • Students who arrive late to class other than the first block, regularly or frequently, will be referred to an Assistant Principal.

First Referral - After school detention.
Second Referral - Two after school detentions.
Third Referral and Subsequent Referrals - Meeting with parents, possible in-school suspension, withdrawal from class, withholding re-registration.
