Alumni Hockey Game

The 12th Annual Alumni Hockey Game & the End of an Era

Hello all alumni hockey fans!

On Saturday, May 4, 2019 we had one of the most thrilling Alumni Hockey games!  It was one that will live long in the lore of this annual event. Team Purple and Team Gold put on an amazing display of skill, resolve, and sportsmanship.

There was a great mix of players in both ability and age.  The two teams, Team Purple and Team Gold, were evenly matched and looked great out on the ice with those sweet VC jerseys.  Team Gold was comprised of the youngest and most ‘experienced’ players. Team Purple was heavily stacked with the best of the 1990s and the well represented Class of 2010.  When the puck dropped, the action took off!

Team Purple held the early pressure with Team Gold goalie Cyrus Huang ’99 standing on his head to keep things tight.  Against the grain, Team Gold took the early lead. Team Gold pulled ahead in the second period despite Team Purple dominating in the shot column.  As the period wore on, Team Gold found their groove and shelled Team Purple goalie James Ling ’10 with lots of quality scoring chances. Eventually Team Gold found themselves with a four goal lead after two periods.  Next up, a third period for the history books!

Even though Team Purple were way ahead on shots, they needed to find another gear.  Slowly but surely, they climbed out of their deficit. Sure enough, with 4 minutes on the clock, they found the tying goal!  With just over 2 minutes remaining, they potted the go-ahead goal for their first lead of the game. What a comeback!

With Team Gold pulling their goalie, they won an offensive zone faceoff.  With the seconds ticking down, Team Purple couldn’t clear the zone. With 14 seconds left on the clock Thomas Harris ’18 tickled the twine to tie the game and force overtime!  With only a short break, the teams sent out their best 4 players per side to decide a winner. Team Gold won the faceoff and the puck ended up on the stick of Grayson Valente ’18 who took it end to end and buried it past the sprawling James Ling ’10.  Team Gold prevails with only 7 seconds of overtime required to seal the deal for a 12 to 11 victory.

Special shout out to Team Purple players Bradley Bumstead ’97 with 3 goals and 2 assists and his classmate Marc Chin with 2 goals of his own at key times.  Fresh off the injury list Dave Clutterham ’92 shined with 2 goals and 2 assists. For Team Gold, goalie Cyrus Huang ’99 stood on his head after facing 52 shots, many of them excellent scoring chances.  The boys of 2018 were amazing, with last year’s hero Marcus Pantazis 2 goals and 2 assists, and Stephen Zelis’ assist for 4 points.

The post-game dinner and social was a more intimate affair this year.  Mahony & Sons UBC did another great job of feeding and watering the players and fans.  Congrats to our oldest participant and long standing supporter Alan Fedyk ’80. Thank you to the Class of 2018 who had the most players with a total of five.  Nice work! Mark Brown ’86 also had the joy of playing with his two sons Scott ’20 and Matthew ’21.

Special thanks to the following people for making this event successful yet again:  Mahony & Sons UBC, Rob Zadra ’88, UBC Arena’s Brian Busenius ’07, our long time referee Craig and newbie Constable Stokes, the school for the jerseys, and my brilliant event co-chair Dave Clutterham ’92.

Of note, this will be my final year running this event.  I was a 12 year man at VC so it’s only appropriate that I step away after 12 years of organizing this fun event.  Over the last 12 years I’ve had the joy of meeting over 120 alumni hockey players, some only once, and others many times over 12 years.  I have you all to thank for this event’s continued success. Please do me a big favour and do your best to support the new incoming alumni hockey commissioner, Dave Clutterham ’92, as he takes over the reins in 2020.

Keep your sticks on the ice…
