Ryan Opina (VC'96)
Ryan Opina (VC’96) is the Vice President of Strategy and User Experience (UX) at Engine Digital, a digital consultancy headquartered in Vancouver. He expanded what luxury train travel could be with Rocky Mountaineer, reimagined the in-store shoe buying experience with Adidas, and redefined how basketball games are watched on mobile with the NBA. Prior to joining Engine Digital, Ryan worked with Microsoft Game Studios on the launch of Kinect for Xbox and at Nokia creating the N series portfolio of smart phones - before iPhones were a thing.
The rigour and expectations held by the coaches and teachers at Vancouver College play a big role in how he approaches his career. As a UX professional, Ryan works with people from all walks of life in order to design better user experiences for his projects. Throughout his career, there has been a constant, connective thread - gaining a deep understanding of why people do what they do to create the right frame of mind for designing new experiences. If you're interested in learning more about what this means, check out his talk at Creative Mornings.
For those who are interested in the industry, Ryan notes, "The key to success is making the connection between how your previous personal, academic and professional experiences have put you in a position to meet the challenges that you are going to face in the industry. There is no one right path.”
