Coaches
Mer Marghetti
Varsity Head Coach/Basketball Program Coordinator
Mer Marghetti has been coaching at Vancouver College for 15 years. She has five years of coaching experience on Junior Varsity and Varsity girls teams, and at Vancouver College, she coached the Grade 8 team for five years, Grade 10 for six years, and two years as an assistant coach with the Varsity team. This season is her second year as the Varsity team Head Coach. During her Kinesiology Degree, she played basketball for Langara College and the University of Saskatchewan. Her passion for basketball originated playing in high school at Lord Byng and continued throughout her post-secondary career. Mer and her husband, Troy, have two wonderful sons, Tyus (Grade 1 at Vancouver College) and Zander (4 years old).
Doug Beers
Assistant Coach
Coach Beers has coached basketball for the past 40 years since he graduated from Richmond High. From 1987-1989 he coached the Junior Varsity team at UBC and was the head Varsity Coach at Vancouver College when he was a business education teacher. Doug and his wife Susie met while teaching at Vancouver College in the late 1980s and have two children. Cam (VC ‘15) played basketball for VC and currently works for an accounting firm in downtown Vancouver. Sadie attended Little Flower Academy and is in the last year of her undergraduate degree at UBC-O. Coach Beers is very excited to coach this hard-working team and see them fulfill their potential this year.
Trixie Cruz
Assistant Coach
Coach Cruz is in her 11th year at Vancouver College. She graduated from UBC with a BA in Psychology and played basketball for the UBC Thunderbirds from 1994-1997. Over the past 20 years, she coached basketball at various levels, including coaching the grade 6, 8 and junior varsity VC teams. She recently completed her Master's degree in Counselling Psychology and works part-time as a Clinical Counsellor in addition to her role as the Learning Resource Teacher for students in Grades 8 to 12 at VC. Coach Cruz and her late husband, John Dumont (VC '93), have three sons; Jack (VC '18); a current player for the UBC Thunderbirds, Hunter (VC '20); a current player for Simon Fraser University, and Cole (VC '22); a senior on this year's VC Varsity team.
Alex Steele
Assistant Coach
Coach Steele has an extensive amount of basketball experience both as a player and coach. He was team captain of the men's varsity team at the University of Alberta where he earned various honours including being selected as a First Team All-Canadian, Canada West Player of the Year and Academic All-Canadian. In addition to his experience at the university level, Coach Steele has also played on the Canadian Men's National team as well as professionally in Europe. Following his playing career he has coached in both the club system and high school system in Alberta, with Canada Basketball’s Targeted Athlete Strategy program and has provided consulting services to university level teams and coaches. In the club system, he has coached Genesis Basketball's elite level high school team (one of Alberta's top club programs), was head coach of Ernest Manning High School boy's basketball team for 3 years and has spent over 10 years focused on individual skill and athlete development training specifically with elite level university and high school players.
Ethan Wong
Assistant Coach
Coach Wong is a graduate of Vancouver College (‘07) and is in his seventh year of coaching basketball at Vancouver College. He played Irish basketball for five years and finished 3rd in the province during his senior season. Coach Wong has completed his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education and is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology while working in the Surrey School District. He is extremely excited to be back at Vancouver College, helping out the varsity team, and working alongside familiar coaches.
