Walkathon

The Vancouver College Walkathon is our annual student and faculty-led fundraiser where students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 come together, in true Irish spirit, to achieve a common goal. This long-standing tradition is made possible through the hard work and effort of teachers, students, and parent volunteers.

2019 Details

Walkathon 2019 will take place on Friday, October 11, 2019 at 8:30am, rain or shine!

All students will be dismissed   before noon, and will receive a hot dog, bag of chips, and juice box upon their return to VC.

This year, funds raised will go towards furniture in the common area of the new Lannon Hall, where we’ll have our Elementary School classrooms, Chapel, Brothers Residence, “Upper Room” which is our multi purpose room, admin offices, staff room, and our new athletic facility. This gym will be used by the Elementary School boys during school hours and then by other teams as needed after school.

Lannon Hall will re-open for September 2020.

Walkathon 2019 Schedule

Boys should be dressed in casual wear on Friday, October 11, but please make sure your son is wearing weather and activity appropriate clothing.

Once students return from their walk, they must report to their advisory/homeroom teacher in the courtyard for attendance.

After they have done this, they will be dismissed and may redeem their map card for lunch! Elementary students will be dismissed at 11:00.

Walkathon FAQs

What is Walkathon?

The Vancouver College Walkathon is our annual student and faculty-led fundraiser where students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 come together, in true Irish spirit, to achieve a common goal. This long-standing tradition is made possible through the hard work and effort of teachers, students, and parent volunteers.

When is Walkathon 2019?

Walkathon is on Friday, October 11 at 8:30AM and we’re pushing through...rain or shine!.

The walk finishes before noon and each student receives 1 hot dog, 1 bag of chips and a juice box upon return to VC.

Students are dismissed early by their homeroom/advisory teacher after the event.

Where do we walk?

The route begins at the school, travels along 37th Avenue, through Queen Elizabeth Park, and ends back at the school. VC teachers and parent volunteers will be present to supervise and ensure the safety of the students.

Students in Grade K to 3 will walk around the track at the school with a buddy from Senior School.

Where does the Walkathon money go?

Every year, the Walkathon Committee, together with the Vancouver College Administration Team, determine where to direct funds raised from Walkathon. Since we started the campus renewal project, Walkathon funds have been directed towards specific needs within the project.

This year, Walkathon will fund furniture in the common areas in the new Lannon Hall, slated for completion next summer.

In 2016 we purchased "test furniture" to gauge their suitability for the new buildings; in 2017 we funded the technology equipment for our new computer lab; and in 2018 we purchased furniture for Manrell Hall.  Past Walkathons have also funded the bleachers at O’Hagan Field, lockers, and library books.

It is important that we work together as a faith and learning community towards a successful Walkathon whether this is your first or last year at the school. Funds raised benefit everyone at Vancouver College.

Who should I approach for pledges?

Family and friends are often willing to help. Neighbours are also people you can turn to.

Someone you ask may decide not to sponsor you and that’s ok.  We are respectful that people have other causes and charities they may support. Whether your prospective sponsor says yes or no, always be grateful that they took the time to listen to you.

How much are we trying to raise?

As a school community, our goal is to raise $130,000, similar to our goal the past few years, which we achieved.

Incentives are offered to students and homerooms based on individual pledges and class totals. In addition, if we reach our goal, we all get an extra day-off school in November!

How long do I have to get money from sponsors?

Homeroom teachers (K- Grade 9) or Advisory teachers (Grade 10-12) do a daily pledge tally.

Cheques or cash are turned in to their homeroom/advisory teachers.  All pledges must be collected and turned in to teachers by the 31st of October.

How is raising money for Walkathon different from Out Next Century?

Walkathon is an annual fundraiser while the Our Next Century is a campaign for a specific period of time primarily for the capital needs of our school.

We encourage families to support their son’s fundraiser to promote school spirit in addition to considering a gift to the legacy of Vancouver College through Our Next Century.

How do I thank people for sponsoring me?

Thanking people is the best part of fundraising and showing our appreciation for our donors’ support is very important.

People genuinely like helping people and they also like to hear how their donation helped you and the school. If your donor is a family member, maybe over dinner tell them how things are going and show them photos of our construction progress.  If your donor is a neighbour, dropping off a homemade “thank you” card or stopping by to say a personal thank you will be appreciated.

Do donors receive a tax receipt for supporting Walkathon?

In February, tax receipts are issued to sponsors who donated $25 or more provided their name and address are on the pledge form.

Students receive tax receipts for their sponsors at school and we encourage students to personally deliver these receipts. This is another great opportunity to thank your sponsors and give them an update.
